Bridal shapewear: what to wear under a wedding dress

A practical guide to choosing the right piece for your dress silhouette

Bridal shapewear is a specific category with specific requirements. The piece needs to stay in place for a long day, work with a dress that may have a structured bodice or a low back, and be comfortable enough to wear for ten or more hours. The choices are narrower than in the everyday category, but the stakes are higher.

Matching shapewear to your dress silhouette

A strapless or off-shoulder dress requires a strapless bodysuit with a silicone grip band at the bust. The grip band holds the piece in place against bare skin; if you plan to wear a strapless bra underneath, the band will not work as intended and the bodysuit will shift during the day.

A backless or low-back dress requires a piece with a low-back configuration, either a bodysuit with a low-back strap or a high-waist brief paired with a separate low-back bra. Full-back bodysuits are not compatible with backless gowns regardless of how they are marketed.

A structured ballgown with a built-in corset bodice may not need a bodysuit at all. The dress itself provides the shaping, and adding a firm-compression bodysuit underneath can create bulk at the waist seam. A high-waist brief or shaping shorts are usually the better choice in this case.

Timing your order

Order your bridal shapewear at least six weeks before the wedding. This gives you time to receive the piece, wear it for a few hours at home to assess the fit, and exchange for a different size if needed. Ordering within two weeks of the event is possible with express delivery, but it leaves no margin for an exchange.

If you are having a dress fitting, wear your shapewear to the fitting. The dress is fitted to your body in the shapewear, and wearing different underwear on the day will change how the dress sits.

What to check at home before the wedding

Wear the bodysuit for at least three hours at home before the wedding day. Sit down, stand up, walk up stairs, and raise your arms. Check that the grip band holds at the bust and thigh without rolling, that the gusset closure is easy to manage, and that the waistband does not dig in when seated. Any discomfort at three hours will be significant discomfort at ten.

The strapless bridal bodysuit in the collection is currently in stock across all sizes. If you are unsure which configuration works for your dress, describe the neckline and back in the contact form and we will give you a specific recommendation.
